In November 2008, Henrietta Morrison, a former publisher set out to create a range of pet food using organic, holistic and human grade ingredients after noticing that her dog Lily was suffering from a series of skin complaints. Failing to find anything that would lift Lily’s spirits and clear her up her skin, Henrietta set about to create the first and only UK company to produce a range of certified organic and certified holistic pet food.
When Lily started to go off her food – it seemed to Henrietta that the food was contributing to the complaints, and it was as if Lily herself knew it was making her poorly. The last straw was when Henrietta consulted her brother, a vet, who reiterated that Lily’s symptoms probably stemmed from inadequate nutrition – the ultimate confirmation she needed to do something about her dog’s diet. She had tried every food on the market but none of them helped Lily.
Over a period of two years, Henrietta spent time with conventional and holistic vets, as well as animal nutritionists, and took advice from the British Association of Holistic Nutrition and Medicine (BAHNM) to create not only a range of nutritious and highly digestible pet food, but meals that would taste as good as a home cooked meal.
The range now includes 13 recipes, from Slow Cooked Lamb Hotpot to Homestyle Chicken and Turkey Casserole. Made in small batches to keep all the nutrition locked in, each recipe is full of beneficial organic herbs including nettle, burdock root, spirulinaand rosehips offering health benefits to the pet’s coat, digestion and immune system.
The last 6 months has seen the addition of four new recipes. The original range of nine recipes has grown to 13. There are now options available in both wet and dry varieties. Nevertheless, the most recent addition to the range is the Lily’s Kitchen Organic Cheese and Apple Treats.
Look out for the new Lily's Kitchen cookbook 'Dinner for Dogs' the must-have cook book for all dog lovers, packed with 50 tasty, healthy and easy recipes for dogs, a perfect gift book for canine pets (and their owners).
Lily’s Kitchen has recently been named as the‘Best Pet Food Company in the UK 2009’ by the Ethical Good Shopper Guide. Henrietta adds: “It is extremely encouraging that pet owners understand the importance of feeding their dog and cats nutritious and highly digestible pet food. And because most of our range is certified organic too, it’s a customer’s guarantee of the foods being chemical-free
